Thinking of Moving to Canada?

canadian-flagWhether it’s concern about what’s going on politically in the US, the discord in the European Union or concerns about terrorism, many people around the world are giving serious consideration to the idea of moving to Canada.

It’s a big decision and as a Life Transitions Coach, who emigrated from the UK to Canada over 30 years ago, I know that it’s not a decision to be taken lightly. Whether your move is motivated by the low Canadian $, fear, or simply frustration over something or someone you don’t like, before you rush into making your move, take time to fully consider all the implications. Read on for 5 steps you need to take to help you decide if moving is right for you.

I wish I could tell you that I really thought through my move from the UK to Canada, but in truth I didn’t. Please don’t get me wrong – I LOVE my adopted country, the thoughtful and caring people who live here and the career opportunities I was provided in Canada. I just hadn’t really researched what it might be like to move to a new country with different customs and values and I certainly hadn’t thought through where in that vast country would be the best place to live.

My former husband had received a job offer in Ottawa and so that’s where we landed in the middle of summer. The heat and humidity was a shock and later there was the winter to deal with. My first marriage didn’t survive the move, however I did meet another wonderful man who I’ve been married to for almost 30 years and we now live in Victoria, British Columbia, frequently voted Canada’s most romantic city. The weather is mild, we’re surrounded by beautiful beaches and picturesque mountains and Victoria has an ever expanding technology sector and a vibrant social and arts scene.

If you’re thinking of a move to Canada, here’s 5 steps you can take to make sure you don’t regret your decision later:

  1. Get really clear on who and what is important to you at this stage of your life
  2. Consider how the people who are important to you will be affected by your move
  3. Research the climate, social scene, housing costs and if you’re still working, the career opportunities in the town or city you’re considering moving to
  4. Consider “test driving” your potential new home by renting a home and living there for 2-3 months
  5. Understand the full financial implications of your move (*)

If after following these steps this still feels like the right move for you, go ahead and enjoy all that Canada has to offer.

(*) e.g. my parents chose to emigrate to Canada in their 60’s and were hugely impacted by the UK’s freeze on pensions which means their pension is frozen at the year they moved with no increases for inflation. Ironically, had they moved to the US it would have been indexed!

Emigrating is a big and often a costly decision and should not be taken lightly. You’re the only one who will really know if moving is right for you and I can help you get clarity on that.
