10 Tips for more JOY and Less STRESS This Holiday Season

Christmas BoxThe Holidays can be a wonderful time of year when we take time to celebrate all that we have and the spirit of the season often encourages us to give to others less fortunate than ourselves.

However, along with all those wonderful feelings can also come a great deal of stress. There’s so much planning and preparation and social events to attend and of course the traditions that can sometimes become more of a burden than a joy.

 Follow my 10 tips and you’ll experience more JOY and less STRESS this Holiday Season

  1. Remember that YOU are Important – it’s so easy to focus on making sure everyone else is having a good time that you may forget to take care of yourself. Remember this is YOUR holiday too – put yourself in the mix.
  2. Make a Plan – make a list of everything that has to be done as early as possible and add target dates for completion
  3. Invite Others to Help – share the list with everyone who participates in your Holiday Celebration and invite them to pick a number of things off the list that they will take care of
  4. Don’t Strive for Perfection – if others are helping, understand that they might do things a little differently than you would and commit to being OK with that – it’s not about perfection – it’s about having fun!
  5. Don’t Get Hung Up on Tradition – if a family tradition is a lot of work for you and you don’t love doing it, invite someone else to do it or suggest an alternative that could work for you
  6. Put a Limit on Spending – set a $ amount for all gifts and stick to it. If someone wants a bigger gift, let 2 or 3 family members club together to buy it. Ask people to provide a wish list that fits the budget.
  7. Find a Way to Give Back – whether you volunteer at a shelter, donate to a food bank, buy a hen or a goat for a family in Africa or invite a recently widowed neighbour in for a drink or a meal, take time to honour what we’re celebrating at this time of year.
  8. Eliminate Non-Essentials – send cards only to people who are really important to you and who you know will appreciate them, consider going out to eat rather than cooking a huge meal, or make it a pot luck meal where everyone contributes something
  9. Build FUN into Your Plans – ask everyone to pick a fun activity that they would love to do over the Holiday Period and add each of their activities to your plan.
  10. BREATHE & Take Mini-Breaks – this is especially important if you’re feeling overwhelmed or if there is any family tension in the air. Step outside and take a moment to unwind and just breathe – you’ll be practicing self-care and able to show up as your best self for others when you do this.

Mini Journal Writing for Self-Care Retreat

 

Journal Writing RetreatYou may know that I’ve been offering Mini Self-Care Retreats in Victoria at the Union Club once per month since the beginning of 2016. I love creating the space for busy women to make time to appreciate themselves and understand the importance of integrating self-care into their lives. I’ve been actively looking for opportunities to bring new workshops and events to build on the work we begin in the mini self-care retreat and I’m delighted to be able to introduce you to another wonderful ICF certified coach, Lynda Monk, who has accepted my invitation and will be travelling from Salt Spring Island to deliver this very special mini-retreat focused on journal writing for self-care.
