Are you REALLY ready to retire?

Victoria Waterfront Mar 2016-0863-Edit (2)It’s a BIG decision with lots of implications both financially and personally. I know because as a life and career transitions coach I’ve helped many clients answer this question and in this blog post I’m going to share my top tips for a successful retirement.

Some of my clients had already retired and weren’t sure they’d made the right choice. Others felt ready and just needed that final clarity on exactly what their retirement would look like before taking the leap. I’ve watched others attempt to retire and return to work because their retirement funds aren’t sufficient to support the retirement lifestyle they desire and others who simply miss the social interaction and sense of purpose that comes from working.

There are some key components to enjoying a successful retirement and it’s not all about the money.

Sue’s Tips for a Successful Retirement

  1. Take time to pause and connect with your values, your natural strengths and abilities and what fulfills you – do this and you have a solid foundation upon which to start to create a retirement you’ll love. Fail to do this and you’ll find many people willing to help you fill your days with commitments and activities you’d really rather not be doing.
  2. Get clear on your priorities for this phase of your life – who and what is most important to you? (*)
  3. Don’t retire as a means to get away from a job or boss you hate – if retirement feels right to you, be sure you have a sense of purpose and a plan for your retirement
  4. Create a clear vision of how you’ll spend your time in the years ahead – you could be looking at 30 to 40 years or more and that’s a long time
  5. Take advantage of all the possibilities that retirement offers – learn a new skill, travel to new places (locally or further afield if your budget allows), join a special interest group that appeals to you or start your own, make new friends, volunteer for a cause you’re passionate about – fill your days with enjoyable and uplifting activities.
  6. Consider your changing needs as you age and make sure your plan accommodates for this. You may be very active in the early retirement years, less active in the next 10-15 years and in time, you may simply wish to stay in your own home and find that you need outside support to be able to do this.
  7. Find a form of exercise that you enjoy and that your body can sustain and build it into your schedule – keeping active both physically and mentally is a key component of a happy retirement
  8. Find a competent qualified financial planner and share your vision for your retirement. Ensure you have sufficient funds to sustain the lifestyle you desire before you decide to retire. If you still have some saving to do, consider re-inventing yourself for a new career that you’ll love (as I did when I became a life & career transitions coach after 30+ years in the corporate world) and you may find that the idea of fully retiring isn’t quite as appealing as it once was.

(*) Getting clear on your priorities is a critical first step when facing any life transition and I’ve developed an online workshop where you’ll coached by me through a proven process and in just 2 hours you’ll get crystal clear on your priorities for this phase of your life. It’s the What’s Important to Me NOW? online workshop and it’s available for only Cdn. $97 from my website at www.suemaitland.com/store – access it and get clear on your priorities TODAY.

Mid-Life Crisis – Myth or Reality?

Mid-Life Crisis (2)We’ve all heard the story about how in mid-life, an apparently happily married older man suddenly leaves his wife of 25+ years for a younger woman and trades in the family sedan for a new sports car. It’s a tongue in cheek definition of what a mid-life crisis can look like, but is there really such a thing as a mid-life crisis and is it only men who experience it?

I believe there is and I see many women experiencing this too. As a Life Transitions Coach I’ve built my practice around helping mid-lifers plan and execute successful personal and professional transitions and whether we label it a “mid-life crisis” or my preferred term “mid-life transition” many women and men in their 40’s and 50’s are driven to make one or more significant changes in their personal and professional lives.

The reality is that we wake up one day and realize that we’re at a point in our lives where we’re probably at least at least halfway done and we may not feel as fulfilled as we’d like. We decide that something needs to change and unfortunately, sometimes without a clear plan or serious consideration for the full implications, we do something to trigger a change either in our personal or professional lives or both. I’ll talk about the consequences of doing this without a clear plan of what you want for the future in my next blog.

Here are some signs that you might be facing a mid-life transition (crisis):

  • You’re dissatisfied with your job and start to resent going to work
  • You look at your partner and feel your relationship has become routine and stale
  • You notice that friends whose company you used to enjoy now seem shallow or boring
  • You’ve recently lost your job and can’t face going back into that same type of work again
  • You dream of owning your own business and being your own boss
  • You’re increasingly focused on signs of aging when you look in the mirror
  • Your life seems dull and uninspired – you begin to yearn for something new and exciting
  • You start to feel that your whole life has revolved around your children & their needs
  • You’ve begun to resent family commitments and don’t enjoy them the way you used to
  • You think more and more about retirement and wonder how soon you can make it happen
  • You really want to make a difference in this world but you’re not sure what that means
  • You’ve begun to be increasing curious about spiritual matters and different religions
  • You feel burdened by financial obligations and wonder if you’ll ever be able to retire
  • You have a sudden desire to get very physically fit
  • You’re putting increased focus on your clothing and overall physical appearance
  • You yearn to have the courage to try new things that you’ve never done before
  • You feel like your life is dictated by other people’s expectations of you and your wants and needs even aren’t being considered and you feel resentful
  • You increasingly find yourself asking the question “Is this all that there is?”
  • You get an overwhelming feeling that you want to leave everything behind and start a fresh new life without any baggage

Did any of these resonate for you?

If they did, you may be facing a mid-life transition and the very best thing you can do when you realize this is PAUSE and take time to evaluate exactly what your next move should be.

Engaging a qualified and experienced life coach at this point in your life may be one of the best investments you ever make since they can help you get clarity on what you really want and this will reduce your stress and allow you to make conscious and empowered choices about your future.

Here’s what my mid-life client Jacques had to say about working with me:

“In respect to the difference working with Sue made in my life, the investment was well worth it. If you’re ready to really improve your life, the investment is secondary.”

In my next blog I’ll share with you some of the costly and painful and consequences of NOT taking the time to plan your mid-life transition and how you can avoid these mistakes.

As an ICF certified Life and Career Transitions Coach I’ve helped many mid-lifers execute successful transitions in the personal and professional lives and I’ve made my own successful transition into a career that fulfills and sustains me. If you would like to explore inviting me to help you with your mid-life transition, please call today for your complimentary consultation at 778-265-6880 or go to my website at www.suemaitland.com and send me a message telling me more about what you’re going through and we’ll arrange a time to connect.

You don’t have to face this alone – take charge of your mid-life crisis and experience the sense of empowerment that comes from having a caring and experienced life transitions coach on your side to help you get clarity on what you really want and then support you as you plan and execute a successful and fulfilling transition.

A Weekend of Self-Care for the Busy Professional Woman

You’re a successful business woman with many competing demands on your time and finding time to focus on your wants and needs often takes a back seat to your many other responsibilities. Give yourself permission to hit the pause button and indulge yourself in two days totally devoted to your wants and needs at the beautiful Tigh-Na-Mara Resort and Spa in Parksville. This small group workshop involves some group activities and also provides for you to capture your own personal thoughts and ideas without sharing with the other members of the group. We’ll explore why women often feel they have to “do it all” and end up putting self-care on the back burner and understand the impact that can have on our health and our interactions with others. You’ll take time connect with what makes you special and explore some activities you can integrate into your life to uplift you. We’ll explore how you can free up time in your schedule to integrate these activities into your day and even practice saying “No” nicely – an important component of making self-care a priority. You’ll leave feeling refreshed and with clearly defined actions you can take to bring more balance into your life.

This very special weekend of indulgence is designed to give you maximum flexibility while offering the opportunity to treat yourself to a wonderful spa experience, or dip in the mineral pool followed by the delicious endless tapas meal with other group members in our robes in our own private dining room. I promise you, it’s a decadent and unique experience that you won’t want to miss.

Day 1 of our workshop will run from 10:00am on Saturday morning until 1pm. The afternoon provides for free time to assimilate what you discovered and enjoy a light lunch in your cabin or at the restaurant and then walk on the beach or indulge in a spa treatment and a dip in the mineral pool before we enjoy our endless tapas experience in our robes at 6:00pm. You must book a spa treatment (which includes access to the mineral pool) or pay $40 to access the mineral pool if you wish to join us for the endless tapas in the private dining room at the Grotto Spa where robes are mandatory.

Day 2 will run from 10:30am on Sunday morning until 1pm with the option of enjoying lunch in the dining room together before we leave.

I want to provide you with maximum flexibility, so each participant is responsible for booking and paying for their own spa treatment or dip in the mineral pool and endless tapas. These indulgences are not included in the workshop pricing. Saturdays can get busy, even in the fall, so please call the spa and book you treatment early at 1-800-663-7373. What’s Important to Me NOW? Workshop

In this powerful 2 hour workshop participants will take the time to ask the question “What are the things in my life that are really important to me right now and what things do I want to give more focus to in the future?” Many of us lead very busy lives juggling personal, work and family commitments and we rarely stop to evaluate whether we’re spending our time on activities that really reflect who we are and what’s important to us as individuals. Others feel stuck in familiar patterns of behaviour that really don’t inspire or fulfill us. If you feel you may be approaching a crossroads in your life, investing a couple of hours with a life coach to help you get clear on your personal priorities can have a profound effect on the rest of your life.

Image knowing exactly what your priorities are and being able to evaluate each new demand for your time or attention in the light of whether this supports what’s most important to you. As you move forward after this workshop and begin to make choices aligned to what’s most important to you, you will begin to feel a powerful sense of control, satisfaction and happiness in the new life you are creating for yourself.

This foundational workshop is a great reference point to begin one-on-one coaching and is pre-requisite for future workshops which may focus on such things as:
• helping mid-lifers and up plan a future move
• understanding what an ideal retirement could look like for you
• building friendships and a social life that supports who you are and what you enjoy after divorce or the passing of a loved one
