Mini Self-Care Retreat

spa shotIf you’re a busy professional woman, give yourself permission to take an evening off and discover why practicing self-care is so important for you AND everyone else in your life. Learn why so many women don’t make taking care of themselves a priority and the impact this has on themselves and others.

Experience a 90 minute self-care workshop where you’ll take time to appreciate some of the qualities that make you special and leave with a plan to integrate more self-care into your life.

There will be some sharing, though this is purely optional. The key focus of this seminar is to create a space for you to do some thinking about what practicing more self-care could look like for you.

At 7:00 pm we’ll all retire to a special table set aside just for us, at the Union Club for a delicious buffet supper that is included in the seminar price of only $77. Enjoying supper together will provide a wonderful opportunity to connect and get to know each other better.

The overwhelming feedback from participants of the Commit to Self-Care and Be Your BEST Self Workshop is that they would recommend it to others and here’s what one participant had to say afterwards:

Are you REALLY ready to retire?

Victoria Waterfront Mar 2016-0863-Edit (2)It’s a BIG decision with lots of implications both financially and personally. I know because as a life and career transitions coach I’ve helped many clients answer this question and in this blog post I’m going to share my top tips for a successful retirement.

Some of my clients had already retired and weren’t sure they’d made the right choice. Others felt ready and just needed that final clarity on exactly what their retirement would look like before taking the leap. I’ve watched others attempt to retire and return to work because their retirement funds aren’t sufficient to support the retirement lifestyle they desire and others who simply miss the social interaction and sense of purpose that comes from working.

There are some key components to enjoying a successful retirement and it’s not all about the money.

Sue’s Tips for a Successful Retirement

  1. Take time to pause and connect with your values, your natural strengths and abilities and what fulfills you – do this and you have a solid foundation upon which to start to create a retirement you’ll love. Fail to do this and you’ll find many people willing to help you fill your days with commitments and activities you’d really rather not be doing.
  2. Get clear on your priorities for this phase of your life – who and what is most important to you? (*)
  3. Don’t retire as a means to get away from a job or boss you hate – if retirement feels right to you, be sure you have a sense of purpose and a plan for your retirement
  4. Create a clear vision of how you’ll spend your time in the years ahead – you could be looking at 30 to 40 years or more and that’s a long time
  5. Take advantage of all the possibilities that retirement offers – learn a new skill, travel to new places (locally or further afield if your budget allows), join a special interest group that appeals to you or start your own, make new friends, volunteer for a cause you’re passionate about – fill your days with enjoyable and uplifting activities.
  6. Consider your changing needs as you age and make sure your plan accommodates for this. You may be very active in the early retirement years, less active in the next 10-15 years and in time, you may simply wish to stay in your own home and find that you need outside support to be able to do this.
  7. Find a form of exercise that you enjoy and that your body can sustain and build it into your schedule – keeping active both physically and mentally is a key component of a happy retirement
  8. Find a competent qualified financial planner and share your vision for your retirement. Ensure you have sufficient funds to sustain the lifestyle you desire before you decide to retire. If you still have some saving to do, consider re-inventing yourself for a new career that you’ll love (as I did when I became a life & career transitions coach after 30+ years in the corporate world) and you may find that the idea of fully retiring isn’t quite as appealing as it once was.

(*) Getting clear on your priorities is a critical first step when facing any life transition and I’ve developed an online workshop where you’ll coached by me through a proven process and in just 2 hours you’ll get crystal clear on your priorities for this phase of your life. It’s the What’s Important to Me NOW? online workshop and it’s available for only Cdn. $97 from my website at www.suemaitland.com/store – access it and get clear on your priorities TODAY.

Mid-Life Crisis – Myth or Reality?

Mid-Life Crisis (2)We’ve all heard the story about how in mid-life, an apparently happily married older man suddenly leaves his wife of 25+ years for a younger woman and trades in the family sedan for a new sports car. It’s a tongue in cheek definition of what a mid-life crisis can look like, but is there really such a thing as a mid-life crisis and is it only men who experience it?

I believe there is and I see many women experiencing this too. As a Life Transitions Coach I’ve built my practice around helping mid-lifers plan and execute successful personal and professional transitions and whether we label it a “mid-life crisis” or my preferred term “mid-life transition” many women and men in their 40’s and 50’s are driven to make one or more significant changes in their personal and professional lives.

The reality is that we wake up one day and realize that we’re at a point in our lives where we’re probably at least at least halfway done and we may not feel as fulfilled as we’d like. We decide that something needs to change and unfortunately, sometimes without a clear plan or serious consideration for the full implications, we do something to trigger a change either in our personal or professional lives or both. I’ll talk about the consequences of doing this without a clear plan of what you want for the future in my next blog.

Here are some signs that you might be facing a mid-life transition (crisis):

  • You’re dissatisfied with your job and start to resent going to work
  • You look at your partner and feel your relationship has become routine and stale
  • You notice that friends whose company you used to enjoy now seem shallow or boring
  • You’ve recently lost your job and can’t face going back into that same type of work again
  • You dream of owning your own business and being your own boss
  • You’re increasingly focused on signs of aging when you look in the mirror
  • Your life seems dull and uninspired – you begin to yearn for something new and exciting
  • You start to feel that your whole life has revolved around your children & their needs
  • You’ve begun to resent family commitments and don’t enjoy them the way you used to
  • You think more and more about retirement and wonder how soon you can make it happen
  • You really want to make a difference in this world but you’re not sure what that means
  • You’ve begun to be increasing curious about spiritual matters and different religions
  • You feel burdened by financial obligations and wonder if you’ll ever be able to retire
  • You have a sudden desire to get very physically fit
  • You’re putting increased focus on your clothing and overall physical appearance
  • You yearn to have the courage to try new things that you’ve never done before
  • You feel like your life is dictated by other people’s expectations of you and your wants and needs even aren’t being considered and you feel resentful
  • You increasingly find yourself asking the question “Is this all that there is?”
  • You get an overwhelming feeling that you want to leave everything behind and start a fresh new life without any baggage

Did any of these resonate for you?

If they did, you may be facing a mid-life transition and the very best thing you can do when you realize this is PAUSE and take time to evaluate exactly what your next move should be.

Engaging a qualified and experienced life coach at this point in your life may be one of the best investments you ever make since they can help you get clarity on what you really want and this will reduce your stress and allow you to make conscious and empowered choices about your future.

Here’s what my mid-life client Jacques had to say about working with me:

“In respect to the difference working with Sue made in my life, the investment was well worth it. If you’re ready to really improve your life, the investment is secondary.”

In my next blog I’ll share with you some of the costly and painful and consequences of NOT taking the time to plan your mid-life transition and how you can avoid these mistakes.

As an ICF certified Life and Career Transitions Coach I’ve helped many mid-lifers execute successful transitions in the personal and professional lives and I’ve made my own successful transition into a career that fulfills and sustains me. If you would like to explore inviting me to help you with your mid-life transition, please call today for your complimentary consultation at 778-265-6880 or go to my website at www.suemaitland.com and send me a message telling me more about what you’re going through and we’ll arrange a time to connect.

You don’t have to face this alone – take charge of your mid-life crisis and experience the sense of empowerment that comes from having a caring and experienced life transitions coach on your side to help you get clarity on what you really want and then support you as you plan and execute a successful and fulfilling transition.

Make This Your Best Year Ever

2015 Your Best Year EverWant to set yourself up for an amazing year? Take a trip with me into the future and let’s look back on your achievements. Give yourself the gift of 30 minutes in a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed and let’s explore what an amazing year could look like for you.

In December I invited my clients to connect with me to reflect on their achievements over the past year. We looked back and uncovered personal and professional successes both big and small and took a moment to pause and celebrate them together. In all cases my clients were surprised and delighted with their accomplishments. You can discover how to walk yourself through this process in this article on my website:  http://suemaitland.com/category/articles/. Reading that article could be the perfect prelude to our trip into the future.

Now I want to share with you the second part of our year-end coaching session. Here are the steps I invite you to follow to create your plan for this year’s achievements:

  1. Write at the top of your notepad “My Achievements This Year”.
  2. Take a couple of nice deep cleansing breaths and get present to the moment
  3. Imagine you’ve stepped through a portal and been transported into the future – it’s now December and you’ve enjoyed an amazingly successful year
  4. As you look back over the entire year ask yourself “What are all the wonderful things that I achieved last year that I may wish to celebrate?” and from the vantage point of the end of the year, write down on your notepad each thing that comes to mind. Don’t hold back – remember it’s been an amazing year.
  5. Now take another couple of deep cleansing breaths and prepare to get really present and open to celebrating your successes this year.
  6. Read out loud each of your achievements and acknowledge and honour each one of them.
  7. Notice how you are now feeling about yourself and your past year. Enjoy that feeling of satisfaction and congratulate yourself on all of your achievements.
  8. Now step back from the future and think of the top 3 actions you could take that would help make this vision a reality and write them on your notepad. Set a date for when you will start doing each of these things.
  9. Consider one key thing that might occur that could impact your ability to achieve those goals and ask yourself “How can I overcome that challenge if it occurs?” Write your answer down.
  10. Notice how you were able to come up with an answer as to how to overcome your challenge and know that you have the answers to be able to overcome any challenges if you just take time to give it your attention and are open to all the possible solutions.

Congratulations – you just set yourself up for an amazing year.

If you would like to explore working with me to help you get clarity on the key achievements you’d like to set for yourself for the coming year and invite me to support you as you build a plan to make them happen, please call or email me for a complimentary initial consultation and you could begin to…

Make the rest of your life
the BEST of your life.
