10 Tips for more JOY and Less STRESS This Holiday Season

Christmas BoxThe Holidays can be a wonderful time of year when we take time to celebrate all that we have and the spirit of the season often encourages us to give to others less fortunate than ourselves.

However, along with all those wonderful feelings can also come a great deal of stress. There’s so much planning and preparation and social events to attend and of course the traditions that can sometimes become more of a burden than a joy.

Follow my 10 tips and you’ll experience more JOY and less STRESS this Holiday Season

  1. Remember that YOU are Important – it’s so easy to focus on making sure everyone else is having a good time that you may forget to take care of yourself. Remember this is YOUR holiday too – put yourself in the mix.
  2. Make a Plan – make a list of everything that has to be done as early as possible and add target dates for completion
  3. Invite Others to Help – share the list with everyone who participates in your Holiday Celebration and invite them to pick a number of things off the list that they will take care of
  4. Don’t Strive for Perfection – if others are helping, understand that they might do things a little differently than you would and commit to being OK with that – it’s not about perfection – it’s about having fun!
  5. Don’t Get Hung Up on Tradition – if a family tradition is a lot of work for you and you don’t love doing it, invite someone else to do it or suggest an alternative that could work for you
  6. Put a Limit on Spending – set a $ amount for all gifts and stick to it. If someone wants a bigger gift, let 2 or 3 family members club together to buy it. Ask people to provide a wish list that fits the budget.
  7. Find a Way to Give Back – whether you volunteer at a shelter, donate to a food bank, buy a hen or a goat for a family in Africa or invite a recently widowed neighbour in for a drink or a meal, take time to honour what we’re celebrating at this time of year.
  8. Eliminate Non-Essentials – send cards only to people who are really important to you and who you know will appreciate them, consider going out to eat rather than cooking a huge meal, or make it a pot luck meal where everyone contributes something
  9. Build FUN into Your Plans – ask everyone to pick a fun activity that they would love to do over the Holiday Period and add each of their activities to your plan.
  10. BREATHE & Take Mini-Breaks – this is especially important if you’re feeling overwhelmed or if there is any family tension in the air. Step outside and take a moment to unwind and just breathe – you’ll be practicing self-care and able to show up as your best self for others when you do this.

Wishing you and those you care about a wonderful Holiday Season

The overwhelming feedback from participants in the Commit to Self-Care and Be Your BEST Self workshop is that they would recommend it to others and here’s what a recent participant, Deb Alcadinho had to say:

“Sue Maitland guides women in a 90 minute self-care workshop encompassing brainstorming, awareness and enlightenment. I had the pleasure of attending one of Sue’s recent workshops and found it extremely worthwhile. As a busy professional, it’s challenging to find time for myself but Sue brought to light some interesting things to ponder and an awareness of self that I had not previously taken the time to do. Thank you Sue for a great 90 minutes, followed by an scrumptious dinner at the Union Club.  Highly recommended! ”

Why Victoria Is My Happy Place

Rutland Park LighterFinding the perfect place to live takes time and self-reflection. I’ve lived in Victoria for over 20 years and after spending a decade in Ottawa, I know it’s the ideal place for me. Many other people in Canada and around the world seem to agree and over the coming years as the baby boomers retire, I anticipate many more people choosing to relocate to this beautiful part of the world – some will be happy with their decision and some will not. We moved here for an improved quality of life and we’ve never regretted it.

Rutland Park full bay shotWe have snow-capped mountains in the distance and we rarely experience snow in Victoria. We’re surrounded by beautiful beaches, some large and popular like Willows Beach in Oak Bay and just a short distance away, this lovely little beach which is almost deserted and so peaceful.

We enjoy many of the benefits and amenities of larger city with less of the hassles that come with living in a big city. It’s true, we live on an island and so getting to the mainland involves travelling by airplane, ferry, seaplane or helicopter which can be a barrier to moving here for some. I’ll never forget my first trip to Vancouver via helicopter – my company paid for my flight and we took off around 7:15 am on a glorious sunny day with the Olympic Mountains bathed in a pink glow and looking down I saw the many islands big and small in the sparkling blue waters below. I had to pinch myself to see if this experience was real. Now I get to see the Olympic Mountains from my kitchen window every day and on clear days when I see that glow on the snow-capped mountain tops, it still takes my breath away.

I love everything that Victoria and Vancouver Island has to offer – beaches, wineries, fabulous restaurants, fun outdoor activities like kayaking and paddle boarding and the many traditional tourist attractions such as Butchart Gardens and the Royal BC Museum. I had the great privilege of showing one of my international clients around when they visited Victoria recently and through my connection with Tourism Victoria, I’m discovering even more fun things to do and places to visit in and around Victoria. A recent speaking engagement took me up island to the beautiful Courtney Comox area and I’m planning a return trip with my husband for my birthday.

A word of caution – if you’re unhappy, simply moving somewhere else isn’t necessarily going to make you happier since true happiness comes from within, however moving to a place where you’re surrounded by people and things that uplift and inspire you, can certainly help.

Where we choose to live can have a huge impact on our quality of life and many of my clients from around the world choose to work with me to get clarity on what’s really important for them before they make a big decision like relocating. If you’re thinking of moving, consider giving me a call for a complimentary confidential consultation. I’ll ask you a few clarifying questions that could be helpful in knowing whether moving is right for you. I’ll also tell you about a simple tool that I’ve developed that can help you create a checklist for your ideal next home that could help you avoid the disruption and expense of relocating and then finding this isn’t your ideal place to live and then having to move again.

Telegraph Cove Apr 2016My wish is for you to find your happy place too and please consider contacting me if you’d like to invite me to help you clarify exactly where that might be.

Please call me at 778-265-6880 or email me at suemaitland@shaw.ca if you’d like to connect.
